I really should learn to read the article before watching the video. I spent a good couple minutes trying to figure out what the phenomenon was about the Tacoma, Tahoe, or...what is that on the left...an Escape?

So many people don't realize that if it really was more fuel efficient for the tailgate to be down or to use a mesh tailgate, they would do it that way from the factory because it costs less and they would get better MPG values on the sticker.
The only exception to that is that I believe a tailgate cover (painted like the body) is the most fuel efficient, but costs more than it's worth (it's still a negligible improvement) for the manufacturer.

FACT: it's more aerodynamic to drive a pickup with the tailgate closed.

I wonder if vortex generators on shortbed trucks would make a difference, since they move the boundary layer back further
